tmj pain

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome or TMJ disorders are common medical problems associated with the jaw joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw to the skull in his ear. Certain facial muscles control chewing. Problems in this area can cause headache and neck, jaw is locked in position or difficult to open, problems biting, and popping sounds when you bite. The ATM is composed of muscles, blood supply, nerves and bones. You have two TMJs, one on each side of the jaw.
Muscles involved in chewing (mastication), also open and close the mouth. The jaw itself controlled by the ATM, has two movements: rotation or hinge action, which is opening and closing mouth, and the sliding action, a move that allows the mouth to open wider. The coordination of this action also allows you to speak, chew and yawn.
TMJ may be caused by trauma, disease, wear and tear due to aging, or habits. Trauma, such as a punch to the jaw or impact in an accident can break the jawbone or damage the disc.
Teeth grinding as a habit can lead to muscle spasm and inflammatory reactions, as causing the initial pain. Usually, someone who has a habit of grinding your teeth, or will mostly during sleep. In some cases, grinding can be so strong that disturbs others.
Press: One who continually presses bites on things while awake. This might be chewing gum, a pen or pencil, or fingernails. The constant pounding on the joint that causes pain. STRESS is often blamed for tension in the jaw, leading to a jaw.
Osteoarthritis: Like other joints in the body, the jaw joint is prone to arthritic changes. These changes are sometimes caused by a breakdown of the joint or normal aging.
Rheumatoid arthritis: inflammation. As it progresses, the disease can cause destruction of cartilage and bone erosion, deformed joints.
Symptoms of TMJ
1. Pain in muscles facial and jaw joints may radiate to the neck or shoulders. The joints can be overloaded. You may experience muscle spasms as ATM. You can feel pain whenever talking, chewing or yawning. The pain usually occurs in the joint itself, in front of the ear, but may move to other parts of the skull, face, or jaw.
2. TMJ can cause ear pain, ringing in the ears and hearing loss. Sometimes people mistake TMJ pain is a problem ear as an ear infection, when the ear is not the problem at all.
3. When the joints move, can hear sounds, such as Clicking, grating, and / or burst. Others may be able to hear sounds. Clicking and popping are common. This means that the disk may be in a abnormal position. Sometimes no treatment is needed if the sounds give you no pain.
4. Your face and mouth may swell on the affected side.
5. The mandible can block open (then dislocated), or can not be fully open to all. Moreover, by opening the lower jaw may deviate to one side. You can find you for a painful side or the other by the opening of the jaw awkwardly. These changes can be sudden. Your teeth may not fit properly together, and their bite may feel strange.
6. You may have difficulty swallowing because of muscle spasms.
7. Headaches and dizziness may be caused by TMJ. You may feel nausea or vomiting.
Occasional pain in the muscles of the jaw joint or chewing is common and can not be a cause for concern. See a doctor if the pain does not disappear. TMJ Treatment should start when in the early stages. Your doctor can explain the operation of joints and ways to avoid any action or habit (eg chewing gum) that might aggravate the joint pain or facial.
Examinations and testing: A medical history and can be done to help physicians diagnose the problem of the jaw. The doctor will ask questions about their habits, as grinding or clenching the teeth, gum often frequent nail biting or chewing objects such as pens or pencils. He asked what type of pain he has and if the pain is there all the time or just come and go.
Physical examination: During a physical examination, the doctor will examine your head, neck, face, and temporomandibular joints, noting any of the following.
1. Sensitivity (pain) and location.
2. Sounds, like click, pop, or grating.
3. The mandible (lower jaw) range of motion and if it is easy to open and close and can move from side to side and front-back without any pain.
4. His assessment of pain on a scale from 0 (no pain) to 10.
5. Wear of the buccal cusps lower teeth, especially the canines.
6. The stiffness and / or tenderness in the muscles of mastication.
7. How do they fit your teeth: normal crossbite, open, overbite, dental restorations, or skeletal deformity.
Image; X-rays can be taken from the mouth and jaw. TC or MRI can also be used. The MRI was designed for soft tissue and, therefore, show the location of the TMJ disc in relation to the jaw and skull bones. That will give the doctor a better idea as to the appropriate treatment approach.
Most cases of TMJ are temporary, therefore treatment is usually conservative. It can also be instructed to go to a specialist, such as oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a general dentist or a doctor pain specialist. Dentists are often the first to diagnose TMJ and are familiar with conservative treatments.
