ATM and mouthguards?

I've recently been diagnosed with TMJ. No nausea or dizziness, just some cracking, popping and occasional pain. My doctor mentioned that may be caused by teeth grinding at night (which my dentist told me that I do) and I might want to look into getting a night guard mouthpiece. But when I opened the box said not recommended for people with TMJ. But it doesn't explain why. I want to stop grinding the night, But I will do my TMJ worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I was only prescribed an NSAID (naproxen), certain muscle exercises and recommened I use ice packs that have been)

depends on what type of protector you are using. Maybe it's a mouth guard hard rubber that is made specifically for your mouth (so your dentist makes an impression and sent to a laboratory), the mouth guard helps the ATM, because it puts the jaw in a relaxed, loosened

The syndrome affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the joint on both sides of the head that connects the lower jaw to the skull, which is vital for everyday activities like chewing, talking, yawning, and more.

Symptoms of TMJ

The TMJ joint is very complex. In addition to the muscles of the jaw, face and neck, but it also affects bones and cartilage of the joint and numerous blood vessels, nerves and ligaments. As a result, victims of TMD can experience very different symptoms, some of which may confused with ear pain, neck injury, or other type of stress on the body.

People who TMD sufferers may experience:

Headaches or migraines

Stiffness or clicking in the TMJ joint

A clicking or grinding noise TMJ joint when the jaw moves

Limited mobility in the joint, causing difficulty opening or closing the mouth

Difficulty biting or chewing

Wear or damage to the teeth

Pain in the face muscles, shoulders and neck

Ear pain, ringing in the ears or hearing loss

Pain or tenderness in and around the jaw itself

If problems persist without treatment ATM case, these symptoms may progress to include chronic headaches and facial pain.

Causes of TMD

There are several common triggers for TMJ, including:

Misalignment in the bite

Braces such as brakes

Stress and emotional tension

Gum chewing or nail biting

Chewing on objects like pens or pencils

Fractures, dislocations, or other injuries

Teeth grinding and clenching of the jaw

Systemic diseases, gout, lupus and Fibromyalgia

Sleep disorders and sleep apnea

Comprehensive dental procedures that cause stress on joints

Arthritis

Although none of these problems can cause TMJ problems, not always a direct correlation. Some people may have a misalignment bite or high levels of stress for years without developing TMJ syndrome, while others suffer dramatic correlation without these triggers.

TMJ Treatment

Depending on the cause of the problem, there are a number of treatment options ATM available, ranging from lifestyle changes that can prevent some dental disease. In extreme cases, surgery may be necessary.

The relaxation and exercise: The first and most common treatment for TMJ is the relaxation and exercise that can help deal with stress more effectively. This often reduces the frequency and impact of clenching and grinding of teeth contributes to most cases of TMJ. Eat bland, using anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and treating the area with hot or warm compresses may also be a temporary solution, useful.

The correction of tooth and bite alignment: If symptoms persist, one designed specifically splint bite or sting Orthopedic leveling is often the best initial therapy to improve jaw function and lessen symptoms. Adjustment or alignment of teeth in The bite is sometimes necessary to correct the problem that initially contributed to the TMJ. Repair of teeth may also be necessary if there has been wear or polished in the chewing surfaces. Examples may include the use of veneers or crowns to correct the flatness of the bite and restore worn teeth.

Surgery: In rare cases, surgery may be required to repair a jaw bone deterioration (when the cause is osteoarthritis) or right of an accident trauma that could have misaligned jaw or wounds on the face muscles. Less than five percent of patients need surgery to correct her TMJ.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is very painful – even debilitating – and many TMJ patients are willing to go to any lengths to treat this disorder. Unfortunately for many patients, despite their willingness to do "whatever it takes", which often do not get the results you are looking for. Ironically, simple solutions are sometimes the most effective, and are not forms of self-treatment of the ATM which are often more effective than surgery.

Articulation temporomandibular – are on each side of the face – is one of the most complicated joints in the body. His range of motion includes side to side, backward and below, as well as opening and closing. There are many muscles and movements associated with the temporomandibular joint that is perhaps not surprising that millions of people with TMJ problems.

Common symptoms include headaches, TMJ, muscle tension, jaw and click pop and even lock jaw. Neck and shoulder pain, dizziness, earache, tinnitus, and pain in the cheeks, temples, sinuses and eyes are other common symptoms of TMJ.

Barring any physical damage, stress is often the primary cause of TMJ. The pain is caused by stress and muscle tension that occurs around of the joint. Curiously, although your pain may be centered around the temporomandibular joint, muscles tense in other areas of your body can be pulling and pulling muscles for the ATM, actually causing the problem of the temporomandibular joint. Naturally, it is important to find the true source of tension and relief from that source to improve the TMJ pain.

Options TMJ treatment may include massage and other relaxation techniques to relieve stress on the muscles. Muscle relaxants, night guards, carrying in his mouth, and heat and ice packs are some treatment options are often recommended by doctors and dentists.

However, all these treatment options of ATM, which appears to be faster and better results long term are the exercises of the ATM – which involves the exercise of the muscles in question. This series of three short minutes, the exercises can produce more dramatic results that any medication or surgery can offer.

So what measures can take to make easier the management and treatment of articulation temporomandibular disorder? Keep a diary of any symptoms of ATM you can find. For example, when you feel a headache or dizziness, make a note in a magazine. Or when experience clicking in the jaw or neck or shoulder pain, take note. Then, on a regular basis to monitor changes in these symptoms.

A Once the TMJ treatment – either exercise, massage or treatment – has been prescribed for you, get another magazine that describes the results. They have improved of symptoms? Are they worse? How long does it take for symptoms to disappear? Does the back pain so often? How long can pass between headaches or neck pain?

If you are taking prescription medication for TMJ pain, keep track of what you take and when. Is it helping the symptoms? Are there any side effects? Keep track of when side effects occur and how severe they are. Having this practical information help your doctor prescribe the treatment that best addresses your overall health.

The creation of journals such as those described here is easy to do. You can use a sheet of paper, a team of word-processing program or even a spreadsheet program like Excel.

You owe it to yourself to take an active role in managing their own health. ATM is incredibly painful, but there are ways to deal with the tension that causes the problem and eliminate the symptoms. It is necessary use all tools at its disposal to ensure the best results possible.
